U (
arla t te-, 9g /
St. Paul Park, MN 55071
Dear Jeff and Erica:
On October 10, I visited your property on Devils Lake in Burnett County to check the condition of your
shoreline buffer. As a condition of receiving a variance to construct an addition to your cabin, you must have a
vegetated shoreline buffer that meets the Burnett County standard.
Your property was close to meeting the standard, but you will have to complete a few plantings and discontinue
mowing an area to come into compliance. I have enclosed a simple site diagram which shows that your viewing
and access corridor is 40 feet wide and it should only be 30 feet wide. You should plant six shrubs and two
trees on one side of the existing corridor and quit mowing this side to make the corridor narrower so your buffer
meets the standard. It is important to keep in mind that 35 feet back from the ordinary high water mark is a NO
TOUCH zone. This means you are not allowed to do any cutting or pruning of any kind within this zone. Even
dead trees should be left alone. I have also enclosed a booklet, "Shoreline Buffer Restoration–A Guide for
Landowners". Please look over this booklet carefully as it will provide planting tips as well as a list of nurseries
where you can purchase native plant stock. Please keep in mind you must use native plants for your buffer
restoration. Your deadline for completing this buffer restoration is June 30, 2012. If you would like to use
different species than the ones I have listed or if you have any further questions please contact me at the number
listed above.
Sincerely,
( -
'?'
