At that time the submissions by VV stated
that the long-range goal of VV was to use the lakes with the least impact on the environment with
priorities to the water quality, animal life and plant life". (Part 5. Page 10)
The county and our members who attended that public hearing were given the impression by Voyager
Village from that goal that there would be no further requests to expand the number of boat slips of the
designated lakes. Loon/Cadotte and Birch Island Lakes were included. The associations believe that water
quality and lake wildlife have been deteriorating since 2002.
Here is some background information for the DNR to consider in evaluating the Voyager Village Plan:
I. The 50-foot rule seems to have outlived whatever its purpose was. It seems the number of
boats per acre of water is a more reliable method to protect water quality. As an example:
Birch Island Lake is about 2.5 times larger than Loon/Cadotte, but it is proposed that they
have nearly the same number of boat slips. These lakes are shallow:the current boating
activity is heavy: and adding twice as many boats to Cadotte and Birch Island Lakes will
cause further decrease in water quality not to mention shoreline erosion and fishing.
2. The Plan states that the depth of the water at the end of the piers will not exceed 5 feet. The
existing piers are in about nine feet of water. Both of those depths exceed the 3-foot rule
above which requires approval from the DNR.
