Groundcover
The minimum requirement for groundcover in the majority of the buffer is that it cover the
soil and be maintained as a no-mow area. Groundcovers listed in the"Woodland
Edge"list are appropriate.
A recommended option for groundcover is to seed or plant short/dry native grass mix.
One mix is available from Prairie Restorations,Princeton,MN (612-389-4342). It
includes side oats grama(30%), blue grama(25%), little bluestem(42.5%), kalm's brome
(1%), June grass(1%), and prairie dropseed(0.5%). These grasses will reach 1-2.5 feet.
Allow to grow to full height outside the viewing/access corridor and minimum
maintenance zone. Seeding and planting instructions are included in the landowner guide.
Prairie Restorations recommends 0.51bs./1000 sq. feet at $19.75/lb. ($9.88/1000 sq. ft.)
plus shipping and handling.
Viewing/Access Corridor and Minimum Maintenance Zone
Bare areas must be revegetated. You may revegetate the groundcover with a lawn mix
suitable for the sandy soils at the site. These areas may be mown and trimmed.
