Burnett County Land and Water Conservation Department
7410 County Road K, #109
Siren, WI 54872
Telephone #(715) 349-2186
Fax #(715) 349-2102
June 4, 2004
Dorothy Drake
2493 Prairie Oak Trail
Woodbury, MN 55125
Dear Ms. Drake:
Your variance application (case 833) for your property at 27869 included a condition of screening
retaining walls near the ordinary high water mark of North Sand Lake. This letter and the enclosed
site plan provide direction for screening the walls with appropriate native vegetation. The
plantings must be completed by June 30,I804to fulfill the variance condition.
19cKi
Be aware that this planting does not meet the Burnett County Vegetation Protection (Buffer
Restoration) Requirements of the Land Use Ordinance. Additional plantings would be required to
fulfill these requirements.
Shrubs are selected that will partly screen but not greatly exceed the height of the retaining walls. Plant
numbers of shrubs with the spacing indicated on the site plan.
The bush honeysuckle is an attractive shrub for landscaping with yellow flowers that attract
hummingbirds and waxy green leaves that turn burgundy in the fall. This shrub will reach 2-3 feet. A
substitute for the bush honeysuckle is snowberry(Symphoricarpos albus) A shrub that reaches 2-4 feet.
Meadowsweet is recommended for the area above water in front of the lowest retaining wall. This
shrub reaches 3 —6 feet. A substitute for meadowsweet is steeplebush (Spirea tomentosa).
Do not substitute non-native shrubs. Be sure to avoid all honeysuckles other than the bush honeysuckle
Diervilla lonicera. These can be invasive in forested areas. Honeysuckles other than this species will
be required to be removed from the planting.
The Shoreline Buffer Restoration Guide for Landowners provides planting instructions, plant lists
and sources, and additional guidance for your restoration project.
Feel free to contact me directly at 715-268-4666 if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Clemens Bursik
Shoreline Restoration Consultant
Cc: Dave Ferris, County Conservationist
Jim Flanigan, Zoning Administrator
