BURNETT COUNTY
LAND & WATER CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT
7410 County Road K,#109
Siren,WI 54872
Telephone: (715)349-2186 Fax: (715)349-2102
Shoreland Restoration Plan—Computer No: 030-9075-03-000
Ken and Suzanne Suma
24589 Clam Lake Dr.
Siren,WI 54872
General Requirements
The restored buffer must extend from the ordinary high water mark,50 feet inland on Class I lakes such
as Clam Lake.
Buffers consist of two major components: the first component—35 feet deep—is a no-touch, natural
vegetation zone and the second component is a minimum maintenance zone. A single viewing and
access corridor up to 30 feet wide may cross both zones perpendicular to the shore. Vegetation
removal, cutting, trimming and land disturbing activities are prohibited in the no-touch zone.
Limited pruning and mowing are allowed in the viewing/access corridor and the minimum
maintenance zone. Walkways,pathways,and stairs must be located in the viewing/access corridor;
and piers, wharfs and lifts must be placed in the water immediately in front of the corridor.
The no-touch zone must be established and maintained from the ordinary highwater mark and extend
inland thirty-five feet. The remaining buffer area, extending back to 50 feet and the 30 foot viewing
corridor must be vegetated.
The booklet,"Shoreline Buffer Restoration—A Guide for Landowners", provides planting instructions,
plant lists and sources and additional guidance for your restoration project.
Viewing/Access Corridor
The viewing corridor and minimum maintenance area(from 35 to 50 feet from the ordinary high water
mark)must be vegetated to prevent erosion.
No-Touch.Natural Vegetation Zone
Instructions for planting native trees and shrubs can be found on page 11 of the landowner guide. Plan
to water regularly the first year to ensure seedling survival. Allow existing vegetation to grow
with no mowing or trimming.
Vegetation native to Burnett County is required for the restoration. The landowner guide includes
appropriate plant lists and a list of businesses that provide native plants. These plants are suited to the
conditions of the property and will provide food and habitat for birds and animals around the lake. Non-
native vegetation planted in this zone as part of the restoration may be required to be removed
and replaced with native vegetation.
Tree Planting
Plant at least 10 trees, scattered throughout the no-touch buffer area(35 feet from high water
mark). Space trees at least 12 feet from each other or existing trees.
