A deck for seasonal restaurant seating has been
constructed over an existing septic tank and over a small portion of an in-ground drainfield installed in
sandy soil. The open deck floor is supported approximately two feet above grade by concrete block
supports resting on the ground surface at spaced intervals. The riser for the septic tank terminates at
approximately deck-floor level and is accessible for maintenance through an opening in the deck floor. The
tank riser lid is concealed beneath a locking trap-door device to prevent unwarranted access.
The owners were informed that a variance to Table 383.43-1 (Horizontal Setback Parameters), Wisc.
Admin. Code, would be required in order to keep the deck in its current location. Approval of a petition for
variance for this purpose would be appropriate since the deck, as constructed, does not interfere with the
operation or maintenance of the septic system and does not pose a risk to human health and safety,
Direct any questions regarding this matter to my attention at 715-634-3484 or to
Edwin.Tay]oT@wisconsiii.gov.
Ed Taylor
DSPS Wastewater Specialist—Hayward Office
