Viewing/Access Corridor and Minimum Maintenance Area
The viewing corridor is split into a 10-foot and a 20-foot opening. The 10-foot opening
may be eliminated or moved, if desired. The viewing corridor and the minimum
maintenance area must have some type of cover to reduce erosion. It is permissible to
have lawn. Control runoff water from structures and driveway by directing water away
from bare and mown areas and encouraging infiltration. Plant bare areas with a lawn mix.
A couple of suggestions are provided below.
Lawn Options
Non-native "no-mow lawn mix"
Fescue turf grasses available from Prairie Nursery 1-800-476-9453.
Prairie Nursery recommends 5 lbs/1000 sq. ft. for$22.50 plus shipping/handling.
Seed non-native "Dryland Ecology Lawn Mix"
A mixture of perennial rye grass, fine fescue, strawberry, Dutch white clover, wild
English daisies, Roman chamomile, yarrow and baby blue eyes. Available from Nichols
Garden Nursery, Albany, OR, 541-928-9280.
2 lbs. seed/1000 sq. ft $39.95 plus shipping/handling.
No Touch, Natural Vegetation Zone
Groundcovers
Do not mow or otherwise maintain existing groundcover in the no-touch zone.
Plant bare and sparse areas. The landowner guide provides guidance for planting
seedlings on page 12. Watering newly planted seedlings regularly for the first few weeks
is critical for their survival.
Area 21: Add color along the dock access by planting a border of prairie flowers and
grasses. Remove exisiting grass following instructions on page 8 of the landowner guide.
Choose plants from the Prairie/Upland Meadow list on page 20 of the landowner guide.
Use at least 30 percent native grasses.
Area 22 and Area 23: Plant seedlings from Oak or Pine Forest list to fill in bare and
sparse areas. Remove spotted knapweed (a noxious weed with blue flowers) from the
sparse are in front of the house. Mulch between plants with wood chips(2 inches) or
straw(3-4 inches). Area 23 is an optional area to plant flowers for color. For area 23, kill
grass by removing sod, spraying with herbicide, or covering with black plastic for 3-4
weeks.
