No Touch, Natural Vegetation Zone
Plant native groundcovers, trees, and shrubs. Instructions for planting seedlings are
found on page 12 of the landowner guide. Plan to water regularly the first year to
ensure seedling survival. Protecting trees and shrubs against deer browsing may be
necessary for successfully establishing vegetation. This is your responsibility. Allow
existing vegetation to grow with no mowing or trimming.
***Vegetation native to Burnett County is required for the restoration.*******
The landowner guide includes appropriate plant lists and a list of businesses that provide
native plants. These plants are suited to the conditions of the property, and will provide
food and habitat for birds and animals around the lake. Non-native vegetation planted in
this zone as part of the restoration may be required to be removed and replaced with
native vegetation.
Groundcovers
Some grasses have been seeded in the disturbed area, but bare and sparse areas
remain.
Area 21: Plant seedlings from the Woodland Edge—Oak/Pine Barrens list on page 29
of the landowner guide. Plant the required seedlings in areas where the grass is not well
established and scattered throughout the buffer zone.
Recommended plants
Big-leaf aster Aster macrophyllus
Columbine Aguilegia Canadensis
Harebell Campanula rotundifolia
Pennsylvania sedge Carexpensylvanica
Trees and Shrubs
Plant at least 7 trees and 20 shrubs, scattered throughout the buffer area.
Recommendations for species are indicated on the site plan. You may make substitutions
from the Woodland Edge—Oak or Pine Barrens list in the landowner guide. Because
the trees removed were so large, you must plant trees that have at least a one-inch stem
diameter.
Do not substitute non-native shrubs. Be sure to avoid all honeysuckles other than the bush
honeysuckle Diervilla lonicera. These can be invasive in forested areas. Honeysuckles
other than this species will be required to be removed from the alantins.
You may trim up to a two-foot diameter circle around newly planted shrubs for the first
year or two to give them a good start. You may need to protect small shrubs from deer
browsing by circling with wire mesh.
Do not trim trees and shrubs except in the designated viewing corridor.
