Use a glyphosate herbicide like Roundup®and Rodeo. Vegetation must be actively growing for
this herbicide to be effective. To encourage growth, mow grass and allow it to regrow several
inches.
2. When applying an herbicide, shield and spray around existing native plants. Avoid drift of
herbicide to water. An aquatic glyphosate formulation such as Rodeo®must be used near the
water in case of drift.
3. Timing of herbicide application is crucial. Do not apply when rain is forecast within the next 24
hours or on a windy day.
4. Wait at least 7 to 10 days before planting native plants. Be certain that vegetation is dead
before planting. If turf is still green or yellow-green, a repeated application is required. It
Is particularly important to kill the grass near the water's edge— reed canary grass is
present there. A third application of herbicide may be required in some areas.
5. Leave dead plant material in place. It will serve as mulch for the new plants by holding
moisture, anchoring soil, reducing weed growth, and contributing organic matter to the soil.
Selecting Vegetation
A total of 5525.50 square feet will be planted.
The area between the boat landings is to be planted with wet meadow vegetation (647.50 square
feet).
The remaining buffer area is to be planted with wet meadow vegetation for the first ten feet from
the water's edge (27 10 square feet) and plants from an Oak/Pine Barrens list for the eight feet
furthest from the water(2168 square feet).
Approved/recommended Burnett County native plants are included on an attached list.
Substitutions may be made from the lists in the Burnett County Landowner Guide for Shoreline
1
