Shoreland Buffer Restoration
To restore the vegetation protection area, groundcover, shrub, and tree layers must be restored.
Vegetation native to Burnett County must be used for the restoration. You can find a list of trees,
shrubs, and groundcovers native to Burnett County and planting instructions at
http://www.bumettcounty.com/DocumentCenter/View/3278
Sources of native plants are also listed in the landowner guide.
A Buffer Restoration Plan - Site Diagram is included to illustrate the planting requirements.
Groundcover
There is about 300 ft2 where groundcover has been removed and soil is bare. To restore this area,
plant 175 seedlings from the Moist Woodland Edge list in the document referenced above.
Prairie cord grass and blue joint grass are recommended. Instructions for planting seedlings are
found in the document on page 13. Do not remove vegetation before planting. The remaining
disturbed groundcover layer (about 515 ft2) may come back on its own by simply not mowing or
trimming. If it does not, additional planting in bare areas may be required.
Native tree and shrub planting is required to restore those layers within the disturbed area (of
about 815 ft2). At a minimum at least 4 trees and 12 shrubs must be newly established in the
disturbed area within 35 feet of the ordinary high water mark (and outside of the view corridor
opening).
Native bare root trees and shrubs may be used. However, planting more than the required
minimum is suggested in case some do not survive. Choose plants from the Moist Woodland
Edge list. Species are suggested on the Site Diagram. Watering and protecting from deer
browsing will likely be required for successful establishment.
Contact me at 715-268-9992 if you have questions about the restoration plan. The restoration
must be completed by June 15, 2018 as indicated in the buffer restoration agreement.
