UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
Geological and Natural History Survey T h e University of Wisconsin
G. F. Hanson
Director& State Geologist 1815 University Avenue
M. E. Ostrom Madison, Wisconsin 53706
Associate State Geologist 608-262-1705
January 26, 1971
Mr. Francis C. Nero
Office of the County Clerk
Burnett County
Grantsburg, WI 54840
Dear Mr. Nero:
I have the pleasure to transmit the final report of the study on
the hydrology of Loon Creek by Mr. Warren Gebert.
The study has analyzed the possible effect of simultaneously damming
Loon Creek to create Lake "A" at a proposed elevation of 981 feet, and
Spring Creek to create Lake "B" at a proposed elevation of 968 feet.
The study indicates that during years of average inflow, Lake "A"
would reach a maximum elevation of 972 feet in May which would decline
to a minimum elevation of 967 feet in the late winter. It would have an
annual inflow deficiency of 4, 300 acre feet, and could not be held at the
planned elevation of 981 feet.
Lake "B" would have a calculated annual surplus of 4,200 acre feet
provided that Lake "A" could be maintained at its planned elevation which,
as mentioned above, appears impossible.
Should Lake "A" be maintained at an elevation of approximately 970,
or 11 feet below the planned elevation, it would seem that Lake "B" would
have an adequate surplus to maintain an elevation of 968 feet as planned.
Should Lake "B" be constructed without Lake "A" it appears very
unlikely that it could maintain its planned elevation.
Three copies of the final report are enclosed but extra copies can
be provided on request.
Very truly yours,
WISCONSIN GEOLOGdC?xZ SURVEY
Y
" ` / St.t ' Geologist & Director
GFH:ac G ° ,
f
cc: Lee Holt
