Please add items into the bid documents that would require the contractor to use BMP's such as
non-erodible cofferdams, appropriately sized and clean riprap, silt fence, etc. Any water pumped
from the work area must be treated prior to reaching the lake (filter bags, dewatering basin, etc.).
This reach of the tributary and Pokegama Lake is a warm water. Therefore, culvert replacement
work should not take place between March 1 and June 15, both dates inclusive. This construction
BMP minimizes impacts to fish and other aquatic organisms during sensitive time periods such as
spawning, winter dormancy, and migration.
Waterway Recommendations
• This project is in a mapped flood plain area. The Burnett County Zoning office should be
contacted with any questions about local zoning ordinances or NR116 requirements.
• The dam at the outlet of Pokegama Lake is going to be removed, which will result in
lowering the surface water elevation of the lake by approximately 1.5 feet. In an effort to
continue to provide aquatic organism passage and stream connectivity at the culverts on
Vesely Road, we recommend lowering the elevation of the inlets of the new structures
approximately six inches lower than they currently are and setting the culverts flat.
Inspections
The Department conducts routine inspections and may follow up to inspect your project to verify
compliance with state statutes and codes. If you decide to modify your project, please contact your
local Department Transportation Liaison to discuss any proposed modifications.
Federal & Local Permitting
The municipality is responsible for obtaining any local, state or federal permits that may be required
before starting your project.
If you have any questions regarding the contents of this letter, please call me at(715) 635-4229 or
email amy.cronk@wisconsin.gov.
Sincerely,
74/7 &VW
Amy Cronk
WDNR Transportation Liaison
cc: Jason Towne, Burnett County Zoning Office
