US Army Corps
of Engineers
S1 r.ti.,
/-/5/,2-0/
Public Notice
APPLICANT: Ruth M. Petschl
REFER TO: CENCS-CO-R (89-142-23)
ISSUED: December 28, 1988
EXPIRES: January 26, 1989
SECTION: 404 - Clean Water Act
1. APPLICATION FOR PERMIT TO DISCHARGE FILL MATERIAL. Ruth M. Petschl
proposes to discharge fill material into wetlands adjacent to Spirit Lake in
Burnett County, Wisconsin. The purpose of the project is to create lots
suitable for sale as cabin sites.
2. SPECIFIC INFORMATION.
APPLICANT'S ADDRESS:
PHONE NUMBER:
AGENT:
ADDRESS:
PHONE NUMBER:
Ruth M. Petschl
Route 1, Box 175
Frederic, Wisconsin 54837
(715) 327-8500
Thomas E. Swenson
Route 1, Box 298
Siren, Wisconsin 54872
(715) 349-2543
PROJECT LOCATION: The project site is located on the north edge of a
peninsula extending into the eastern portion of Spirit Lake. This site is
located in the NE 1/4 NW 1/4 of section 12, township 37 N., range 18 W.,
Town of Trade Lake, Burnett County, Wisconsin.
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: A total of 1.2 acres of wetlands would be filled
for the project. Two separate areas would be filled (see attached drawing).
The area on the west side of the property consists of a narrow neck of wetland
leading south from the lake to a wider area along the public road. Fill has
been placed in this area in the past to create a small road separating the
narrow portion of the wetland from the wider portion. The other proposed fill
site consists of two remnant pockets of wetland on the eastern end of the
property. Past filling has created roads or trails that apparently separate
the two pockets from the rest of the wetland basin extending farther to the
east.
VEGETATION IN AFFECTED AREA: The appropriate Wisconsin Wetland Inventory
map identifies some of the area as consisting of scrub/shrub wetland with
broad-leaved deciduous vegetation growing on wet soils (M). Vegetation
observed in the area includes black ash, aspen, sedges, and cattails.
SOURCE OF FILL MATERIAL: A gravel ridge on the property that has already
been extensively mined is a likely source of fill material for the project.
SURROUNDING LAND USE: Lakeshore cabins.
1
