Wisconsin area and I know how tough it is to attract businesses but everyone that I knew worked very hard to
find and stay employed. But in my rural area, we didn't dislike people from the cities, as they do in Burnett
County. Then,to complicate matters, we found out that the locals enjoy calling cabin owners "cityits" (similar
to idiots). We have tried to support the local economy but have found that this is not a very satisfying course
of action. In our 10 plus years of being around Burnett County,we have seen countless examples where city
people come in 3rd, 4m or 5th place in line when dealing with some of the local businesses. But the final straw
for many cabin owners happened last year when we started interacting with the Burnett County Land Use
Board.
Last year, we found out that the county was going to allow another massive campground expansion but this
one was on our lake. We understand that we cannot control areas that we do not own BUT many cabin
owners have come to realize that it appears that BURNETT COUNTY as a whole, just doesn't like city people
either.
It wasn't just our lake. It appears that nearly every lake in the county is open for new campgrounds. Since
2014, the county has added 1,000 to 1200 new campground sites, with no end in sight. These aren't just
campground sites. Oakridge Campground, one of the campgrounds that has expanded, owned by Steve
Austin, one of the county supervisors, allows 250 sq ft. decks and 448 sq ft sheds for all of its 130 plus
campsites. These campgrounds can take over a lake, yet pay relatively little in property taxes. My
understanding is that Steve Austin just purchased another mega campground on the same 800 acre lake.
When I started fighting campground expansions, I had a quick education regarding how Burnett County
supervisors feel about cabin owners. I spent hundreds of hours fighting this and was able to contact many
people from lake associations all over the county. What I found was that many of these people were treated
poorly by the county and it has left a lot of resentment with all of us.
I spoke to one person that debated a campground expansion with one of the county supervisors and was
told,"if you don't like it, maybe you should move". I have spoken to many people that state that they are going
to do whatever they can to STOP SUPPORTING THE COUNTY as a result of their interaction with the county.
Many of these people are doing everything in their power to bring all supplies from the cities and cancel any
improvement plans that they had.
Last year I wrote letters to all of the Burnett County Land Use Board members and talked to whoever would
take or return my call. My letter included many pages of detailed facts and figures but every point was
dismissed.
I spoke to the land use board chair and summarized the points in my letter to him because it appeared that he
had not read it. For example, I mentioned that with the massive expansions:The main arteries to Burnett
County are two lane highways and cannot handle this influx of campers, especially on long weekend. He had
no comment for this; My understanding is that most of the county is policed by Burnett County sheriffs
because only 3 small towns have their own police force. I heard directly from one of the deputies that
normally, there are only 2 deputies to patrol Burnett County's 850 sq miles. The land use board chair
dismissed this with, "I don't know that this is true"; I stated that I didn't understand what the county hoped to
gain from this expansion. For the most part, campers bring up most of their own supplies from home, yet the
county only yields .5%from any sales of hard goods, so the county may yield $.50-$1.00 per visitor.
It didn't matter, whatever point I brought up to him was shot down. Every point that I brought up was either
ignored or he responded with, "show me the proof". The board members continued to tell me that Wisconsin
ACT 67 forced them to pass ALL CONDITIONAL USE PERMITS!! As I talked to any agency in the state to help us,
