Rain Garden
Rain gardens collect water from impervious surfaces such as rooftops, roads, sidewalks, compacted gravel and
more. They treat polluted stormwater runoff and allow for water to infiltrate into the soil from native plant roots
before entering into lakes, rivers and streams.
When installing a rain garden the following setback standards must be met:
• Rain gardens must be at least 10 feet away from building foundations will full basements.
• Rain gardens must be at least 5 feet away from building foundations with frost footings or pavement.
• Rain gardens must be at least 8 feet away from wells.
• Rain gardens must be at least 5 feet away from septic systems.
For your property, you will need to construct two rain gardens to capture the entire addition due to the nature of
the property and the setbacks to basement.
Rain Garden 1: Front of home(See location in Figure 2).
• To capture part of the new addition and existing cabin this rain garden must be at least 120 sq ft.
• At least 70 plant plugs would be required for this option and planted at least 18 inches apart. Choose
plants that enjoy a wetter environment at the base of the rain garden and drier plants for the berm.
• The rain garden should be at least 8 inches at the base.
• The rain garden should be designed lower where the underground pipe flows into the garden and higher
around the sides and back. The berms can be made with the evacuated soil from digging out the base.
• Construct a rock overflow during heavier storm events which would be located on the back berm side
facing a natural area, such as your woods.
• Plants must be watered regularly.
• This rain garden must be at least 5 feet away from the septic system.
• Pipe the downspouts underground and directly into the rain garden using. The trench should be at least
12-18 inches deep(ensure below frost line) and leave at least 4 inches of space between either sides of
the pipe. The pipe should be at least 4-inches wide
'. \
 L -..
er Tw i
tf Ad .
II i . air '''
I-
tit—,
, a, _J
a A
...
iir m
Figure 2 Above.
