Viewing/Access Corridor
Uses such as boat/canoe storage must be concentrated in the corridor.
Any bare areas in the corridor and the minimum maintenance area must be planted
with a groundcover. These are indicated with a `121" on the site plan.
Native prairie grasses are recommended because they are adapted to the sandy soils.
Seedlings are recommended, but this area could also be planted with seed. Plant seedlings
according to instructions on page 12 of the landowner guide.
One native grass seed mix is available from Prairie Restorations, Princeton, MN (612-
389-4342). It includes side oats grama(30%), blue grama (25%), little bluestem (42.5%),
kalm's brome (1%), June grass (1%), and prairie dropseed (0.5%). If left to grow, these
grasses will reach 1-2.5 feet. Prairie Restorations recommends 0.5lbs./1000 sq. feet at
$19.75/lb. ($9.88/1000 sq. ft.) plus shipping and handling.
Another option is some type of lawn grass. We have seen reasonable success with fescue
grasses in sandy areas. One mix of these grasses is available as a "no-mow lawn mix"
from Prairie Nursery(800-476-9453). They sell 5 lbs. (enough to cover 1000 square feet)
for about $30.
No Touch, Natural Vegetation Zone
Groundcovers
Do not mow or otherwise maintain existing groundcover in the no-touch zone.
Any bare and sparse areas must be planted with native groundcovers (Areas 22 and
23). Seedlings are recommended. Follow planting instructions in the landowner guide on
page 12. Choose plants from the Woodland Edge- Oak/Pine Barrens list on page 27 in
the landowner guide. Use at least 30 percent grasses for this planting (50 percent grass is
even better).
The following species are recommended:
Grass
Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scorparium)
Side oats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula)
Flowers (if desired)
Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)
Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia)
Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa)
Sky blue aster (Aster oolentangiensis)
It is important to water these plantings regularly to ensure good survival of seedlings.
3: September 27,2002
