No Touch, Natural Vegetation Zone
The entire area to be restored must be considered a no-touch, natural vegetation zone. Do not
mow, trim, or otherwise maintain existing groundcover, trees, or shrubs in the no-touch zone.
***Vegetation native to Burnett County is required for the restoration.*******
The landowner guide includes appropriate plant lists and a list of businesses that provide native
plants. These plants are suited to the conditions of the property, and will provide food and habitat
for birds and animals around the lake. Non-native vegetation planted in this zone as part of
the restoration may be required to be removed and replaced with native vegetation.
Groundcovers
A temporary cover of annual rye grain must be established following removal of fill and
prior to October 15, 2005.Reform ice ridge, placing an excelsior erosion control mat over the
newly formed ridge and staking the mat in place.2 Use 1 pound annual rye grain per 1000 square
feet(approximate disturbed area)under the mat.
Allow existing groundcovers to grow with no mowing or trimming. Plant all bare areas
with a permanent cover of native seedlings prior to June 30, 2006. Trim grass to 4-6"
before planting seedlings in the late spring.
Recommendation: Allow leaves to fall in place on the area to be planted next year. Stockpile
additional leaves to be used as mulch for the late spring planting.
Area 21 Wet Meadow: 210 seedlinEs needed
Follow instructions for planting seedlings on page 12 of the landowner guide. A mulch of leaves
or straw (3-4 inches deep) should be used.
Choose seedlings from the Wet Meadow list on page 22 in the landowner guide. Use at least
30% grasses and sedges. Plant seedlings 18 inches apart.
Recommended grasses and sedges (groundcovers)
Prairie cordgrass
Blue joint grass
Big bluestem
Area 22 Wetland area: allow natural vegetation to regrow
There should be an adequate seedbank in wetland soils. If plants do not grow by midsummer,
seedlings must be planted. Choose seedlings from the Wet Meadow list.
Z Excelsior erosion control matting is available from the Land and Water Conservation Department by appointment.
Rolls of 720 square feet are$55.Call 715.349.2186 to order matting.
