No Touch, Natural Vegetation Zone
Do not mow or otherwise maintain the existing groundcover in the no-touch zone. There
is a nice, native groundcover on much of the north side of the lot.
Bare areas must be revegetated. Planting seedlings is recommended. Instructions are
included in the landowner guide. Plants should be chosen from the Oak/Pine Forest list
for the north side of the property where it is shady(area 22). Large-leaf aster is a good
choice from this list. Some grasses such as bottlebrush grass, Canada wild rye, and June
grass will do ok in partial shade.
Bare areas on the south side of the property also must be revegetated(area 23). Choose
from the Woodland Edge—Oak Pine Barrens list for groundcovers and flowers on this
side. June grass also seems to be doing well on your property, so you could plant that
also.
Plant shrubs and trees as indicated on the site plan. You may substitute from the
Woodland Edge—Oak Pine Barrens list if desired. Choose at least 2 different shrub
species for your restoration. Shrubs may be transplanted from nearby wooded areas. Be
aware that there are some invasive, non-native shrubs such as honeysuckle and buckthorn
that are common in woodlands in Burnett County. Bare root seedlings and transplants,
which are very economical, are generally available in the spring from county-sponsored
sales or directly from suppliers in larger quantities.
Viewing/Access Corridor
A 30-foot wide viewing/access corridor is allowed as indicated on the site drawing. Uses
such as boat/canoe storage should be concentrated in the corridor or outside of the buffer
zone.
Bare areas in the corridor must also be revegetated. A lawn cover is adequate for this
area. Some options you might consider:
Option 1: Seed short/dry native grass.
This mix is available from Prairie Restorations, Princeton, MN (612-389-4342). It
includes side oats grama(30%),blue grama (25%), little bluestem (42.5%), kalm's brome
(1%), June grass (1%), and prairie dropseed(0.5%). If left to grow, these grasses will
reach 1-2.5 feet. To maintain a lawn area, mow to 6 inches occasionally. Allow to grow
to full height outside the viewing/access corridor. Prairie Restorations recommends
0.5lbs./1000 sq. feet at$19.75/lb. ($9.88/1000 sq. ft.) plus shipping and handling.
Option 2: Native grasses with yarrow.
Seed or plant plugs of yarrow with the above grasses. Wild strawberry is a good addition
if you can find it. The yarrow adds soft foliage to the lower-growing grasses from the
above mix. Maintain this as described above.
3: May 22,2000
