BURNETT COUNTY ZONING ADMINISTRATION
BURNETT COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER
7410 COUNTY ROAD K,#102 PHONE(715)349-2138
SIREN,WISCONSIN 54872
Inspection Report: System Repair
On December 15,2006,at 2:45 pm,l inspected the repair of a Mound type Private On-site Wastewater
Treatment System at the residence of Mike and Kelly Moritz,at 12431 North Fork Drive, located in
Section 8,T38N R18 W,Town of Wood River. The system had been installed under Sanitary Permit
445614(Co.#28158)on October 24,2003. Master Plumber Nils Koerper,WS Carl Lippert and I had
previously determined that the holes in the distribution laterals appeared to be plugged. The pump
originally installed had also failed There was no evidence of ponding within the soil absorption cell. The
property owner asserts that the Zabel A-100 septic tank filter has not been removed, and it does not appear
to have floated up,as there has not been a backup into the structure. There also has been a water softener,a
dehumidifier, and condensate from a high efficiency furnace connected to the wastewater system. The soil
cover above the laterals, was carefully excavated by hand, the filter fabric cut,and the aggregate above and
alongside the laterals removed and saved,to be replaced later. The laterals were removed and flushed with
clean water. The 1/8-inch diameter holes were plugged with a durable, brownish gray material,in some
cases containing white flecks. We had observed sludge present within the laterals when they were flushed,
while we were diagnosing the specific problem with the system, however, very little,if any, sludge
remained within the laterals when they were removed.
Corrective Measures
After cleaning the laterals, the holes were re-drilled to 3/16-inch diameter,at the same spacing as
previously approved, and they were reconnected to the manifold within the mound The aggregate was
replaced, and new strips of filter fabric placed over the seams where the laterals had been removed. The
soil cover was replaced, and the area of the cell and part of the adjacent toe covered with hay for insulation.
The failed pump was replaced with a Zoeller 152. This pump supplies more than adequate flow to
accommodate the increased flow rate from the larger hole size in the distribution laterals.
The handle of the Zabel A-100 septic tank filter was to be extended to immediately below the septic tank
manhole cover,to assure that the filter cannot float.
The water softener backwash and dehumidifier have been disconnected from the wastewater system, and
are now being handled as a clear water discharge from a sump that had been installed in the house, but was
not previously in service. The area is suitable for a clear water discharge per Com.82.
Comments
Due to the current`open winter"conditions, and the potential for deep frost penetration, this system will
remain susceptible to freezing in the absence of significant snow cover, for the remainder of this winter.
The repair conducted does appear to have resolved the problem of the blockage of the holes within the
distribution laterals. The property owner has been advised to allow significantly more vegetative cover to
remain on the mound,or add hay or straw,in the 4611,to provide better insulation from frost in the absence
of substantial snow cover.
Date Qj I
Craig Conroy POWTS Inspector Cert.No.70131
