UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
Geological and Natural History Survey T h e University of Wisconsin
G. F. Hanson
Director& State Geologist 1815 University Avenue
M. E. Ostrom Madison, Wisconsin 53706
Associate State Geologist 608-262-1705
March 4, 1971
3IS119 7J
Mr. Francis C. Nero
Burnett County Clerk
Grantsburg, WI 54840
Dear Mr. Nero:
Thank you for your letter of March 1. I am sorry that the appearance
on March 5 had to be called off as Mr. Gebert and Mr. Olcott had both set
time aside for this meeting, and the fact that another report might be
forthcoming would, in no way, affect the report that we have submitted.
The recorder house that we set up for the measurements is still in
place although we removed the recorder when we completed the measurements.
If the people who are making the run-off measurements during the spring would
wish to use this installation they are welcome to do so.
Both Mr. Gebert and Mr. Olcott, our geohydrologist, feel that little
pertinent information can be gained from further streamflow measurements at
this time. Although they could, of course, be considerably refined the data
are reasonably reliable based not only upon the short-term measurements on
Loon Creek but on their correlation with longer term records of streams in
the area.
The most critical factor now would be to set a more precise figure for
the transmissability of the material in the vicinity of the reservoir site,
which would control the amount of water lost by leakage. This could only be
determined by pumping tests.
The July-August period is a very busy one for us and most of the people
are in the field or on vacation. We would be glad to explain our report to
the County Board but there is no need for such an explanation to await the
preparation of the second report.
Very truly yours,
WISCONSIN GEO QGICAL SURRVEV_
eologist & Director
GFH:ac _ate_G,
P.S. I checked with Mr. Gebert and Mr. Olcott following our phone conversation
and they would be glad to attend the Board Meeting at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday
April 20.
